Green Shoots for Women in Leadership

Some encouraging developments and commentary on women in leadership this week. Maurice Lévy, chairman and CEO of Publicis Groupe, one of the world’s largest advertising and communications firms, tied business success to celebrating differences – meaning diversity – in remarks to The Chicago Network’s annual Women in the Forefront Luncheon. Leading by example is crucial to sending the message throughout the organization, and, at Publicis, women make up more than 50% of its board and are in senior positions across many agencies. Women also make “most of my best campaigns,” Lévy said. The same day, a survey of The Network’s members in Crain’s Chicago Business found that 78% felt they had been given the same opportunities as their male counterparts. And, more upbeat news: The prestigious Economic Club of Chicago has just named its first female chair, Ingredion CEO Ilene Gordon. All told, a very bright week.
